Personal storage

There's personal storage available for all lab members at ell-vault server, according to the following guidelines:

  • This is a convenient space for you to store your working files.
  • It offers you a very simple way to share online your results and files.
  • This space is NOT to store permanently project results, publication data, large datasets or image bundles.

How it works

Your personal space is basically a private (requires your username and password) WebDAV directory, with an optional open www folder that can be accessed publicly by anyone (and you can use to share presentations, files, etc...). I have chosen WebDAV because:

  • It uses regular open https traffic, allowing people outside Stanford network to access it (ssh port is not open outside Stanford VPN).
  • It's a standard that should be supported natively by all major OS (Plot twist: is NOT by macOS and not very robustly by Windows. Who would have guessed?).
  • There's plenty of clients to chose from that interact with it.
  • It easily combines the storage solution with the share/publication solution for everyone regardless of computer knowledge.

Request access

You can request your personal 1TB account at any time contacting me in slack and providing:

  • A desired username (preferably your SUnetId or any other short form)
  • A desired password

If you require temporarily more space, contact me to discuss alternatives!

How to access

Once your account is setup, you can access it in several ways, depending your OS:

Windows:

  • Alternative 1: change to linux and be free
  • Alternative 2:
    • Download and install (free) WinSCP ( https://winscp.net/eng/index.php )
    • Input the connection information Connection
    • Press the Advance button and edit Directories -> Remote directory field Advance
    • There you go There you go
    • If you want to conveniently save the connection, go to Session -> Save session as site Save connection 1
    • Press ok Save connection 2
    • Use saved connection from now on Saves connection

macOS:

  • Alternative 1: change to linux and be free
  • Alternative 2:
    • Donwload and install (free) Cyberduck ( https://cyberduck.io/ )
    • Press Open connection and input the connection information (OBS: see that you manage to get that server and URL exactly the same!) Connection
    • There you go There you go
    • You can save that connection as a bookmark for future usages

Linux:

  • Keep enjoying freedom
  • Alternative 1: command-line hero
    • Install davfs2 package: sudo apt-get install davfs2
    • Mount the directory: sudo mount -t davfs -o noexec https://ell-vault.stanford.edu/dav/{your_username}/ /mnt/dav/ (OBS: mind the final slash!)
  • Alternative 2: GUI native
    • Go to "Other locations" and input the server address davs://ell-vault.stanford.edu/dav/{your_username}/web Connect
    • Input your username and password Credentials
    • There you go There you go
  • Alternative 3:
    • Worst case scenario install WinSCP through Wine and follow Windows Alternative 2 guide.

From any browser, read-only mode:

Share/publish data

Your account has by default 2 directories, www and web. You should never access/touch directly the www folder. The web directory is linked to it, so whatever you put/delete in this folder will be reflected in www folder.

The web directoy is special and whatever you put there will be publicly available for everyone via browser at the URL https://lundberglab-vault.stanford.edu/dav/{your_username}/www/ . You can copy here presentations, html pages or directly files as a regular web site as a way to easily show your work.

Project storage

Storage for project data can be granted on demand at ell-vault server, according to the following guidelines:

  • You have to fill up all the related information about the project (see below).
  • This space is meant to keep only the most critical/permanent information, not any temporary or working results (you can use your own personal devices for that)
  • Although there's a responsible for each project space, all stated members have complete access to the data, so be careful with it.
  • You should not trust that this information is backed up somewhere (it is, though): keep a copy of the most critical/important information somewhere else.

How it works

The project storage is basically a shared folder in your personal space (which you need to request before ask for project storage). All stated project members have full access to it (including deletion permissions), so be careful while managing this data.

Request access

You can request project storage at any time by sending me the following filled information through slack or mail. After verifying the information with Emma (which might trigger some additional clarifications with you), I'll let you know when the space will be available!

  • Name:
  • Directory filename: [relatively short, lower case, no spaces, underscore allowed]
  • Responsible:
  • Members:
  • Size: [in TB, min 1TB]
